What Focal processes
The PDF you choose, rendered page pixels, highlight selections, previews, and exports are processed in the browser on the device you are using.

Focal is designed to transform highlighted documents without sending the document to a Focal processing or storage service. The boundaries below describe the current browser application and do not claim a compliance certification.
The public demo uses Focal's fictional sample. Customer PDF import is available only in the signed-in Focal Professional workspace.
What Focal does not provide
Focal has no application document-upload endpoint, document database, matter storage, cloud synchronization, OCR service, analytics beacon, or document-content telemetry.
What the web host sees
The hosting provider receives ordinary requests needed to load the website and may retain request metadata such as IP address, time, user agent, and requested URL. Your browser, device, extensions, network, download location, and operating-system reporting remain outside Focal's control.
What saved work contains
A saved .focal file contains the source filename, rendered document pages, and review state. It is not encrypted. Protect it like the original evidence and keep it only in customer-approved storage.
What account and billing use
Focal stores a keyed account identifier and content-free subscription status. Stripe handles checkout and billing details. Focal does not send PDFs, page images, filenames, selections, saved projects, or exports to Stripe.
SUPPORTED USE
Keep the original. Review every output.
Use a current Edge or Chrome browser on a supported Windows work computer. Standard, unencrypted PDFs within the limits shown in Focal are the supported path. A qualified member of the legal team must compare every graphic with the source before presentation, filing, production, or sharing.
- Retain the original PDF as the authoritative source
- Resolve every possible mark before downloading
- Check names, dates, times, numbers, context, crop, and color
- Review the entire slide; surrounding or full-page context can remain readable
- Do not use Focal as a redaction or de-identification tool
- Store exports and saved work under the customer's matter-security rules
- Stop using an affected output if text appears changed, faded, or misleading
CURRENT ASSURANCE
Evidence-backed, with explicit limits.
The current release is protected by deterministic recognition, cleanup, export, hostile-input, privacy, accessibility, and packaged-runtime regression checks. Focal is not SOC 2 certified, independently penetration-tested, or represented as HIPAA compliant; no BAA is currently offered. It is not guaranteed to find every highlight or guaranteed fit for court. Ambiguous results are routed to human review.
